Who has the right to strike?

Support or not a strike should be a right, a choice that each of us takes in a personal way, and not an imposition. However, in the 21st century there are people who still do not understand that do not claim rights in the same way does not mean that we do not support the same cause.

This morning, on the occasion of the student strike for days 1, 2 and 3 March, a group of “picketing” have stuck the access to the Faculty of Communication Science, an episode that has become widespread by all the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB). The strike was called last week by the different assemblies of this University due to paralyse known as 3+2, a reform in which the quality of public education will be weakened by instability and privatization. These claims gained still more force when last year held a referendum in this same University in which 95% of students voted to stop this reform.

In particular, the new law on education is based on the reduction of the degree (up to now 4 years) to 3 years. The aim of the Government of Mariano Rajoy and with the support of the Catalonia’s Government is to adapt to the new standards imposed by the market, eliminating the fourth year of specialization and to complete a master if you want to aspire to such preparation. The result is none other than the reduction of the access of the working classes (post) University Studies; each year more expensive studies which are reduceing their offer to adapt to the demands of the market, too.

As a student, I strongly support the cause. There is no right to this law when the educational community and especially the University is fully against. Having said that, however, the strike is an individual right, and despite who gets irritated, no one may be deprived the right by another to join or not to this. I am referring to curtail step, the door of my own Faculty. Thus, go to class today does not mean that I do not support the cause, but it seems that many interpreted this as a lack of unity, a lack of commitment with this strike. To be honest, a measly 3-day strike won’t change anything. If you want to stop this, do it well. One month, two, those necessary to make those rubbishy politicians see sense.  But not three few days that all they get is “get mad staff”, and most importantly, miss another opportunity for improve and learn before everything could be changed.

¿Quién tiene el derecho de huelga?

Secundar o no una huelga debería ser un derecho, una elección que cada uno de nosotros toma de manera personal, y no una imposición. Sin embargo, en el siglo XXI hay quien todavía no entiende que no reivindicar unos derechos de la misma manera no significa que no se apoya la misma causa.

Esta mañana, con motivo de la huelga estudiantil convocada para los días 1, 2 y 3 de marzo, un grupo de “piquetes” han atrancado el acceso a la Facultad de Ciencias de la Comunicación, un episodio que se ha generalizado por toda la Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona (UAB). La huelga fue convocada la semana pasada por las distintas asambleas de esta universidad con motivo de paralizar el conocido como 3+2, una reforma en la que la calidad de la enseñanza pública se verá mermada por precariedad y privatización. Estas reivindicaciones ganaron todavía más fuerza cuando el pasado año se celebró un referéndum en esta misma universidad en el que un 95% de los estudiantes votó por frenar esta reforma.

En concreto, la nueva ley de enseñanza se basa en la reducción del grado (hasta ahora de 4 años) a 3 años. El objetivo del gobierno de Mariano Rajoy y con el apoyo de la Generalitat es adaptarse a los nuevos estandartes que impone el mercado, eliminando el cuarto año de especialización y obligando a cursar un máster si se quiere aspirar a dicha preparación. El resultado no es otro que la reducción del acceso de las clases trabajadoras a los estudios (post)universitarios; unos estudios cada año más caros y que se está viendo como reducen su oferta para adaptarse a las demandas del mercado.

Como estudiante, apoyo firmemente la causa. No hay derecho a esta imposición cuando toda la comunidad educativa y especialmente la universitaria está plenamente en contra. Dicho esto, sin embargo, la huelga es un derecho individual, y pese a quien le pese, nadie puede privar el derecho a otro a sumarse o no a esta. Me refiero a coartar el paso, la puerta de mi propia facultad. Que acuda a clase hoy no significa que no apoye la causa, pero parece que muchos lo interpretan como una falta de unidad, una falta de compromiso con esta huelga. Para ser honestos, una huelga de 3 míseros días no va a cambiar nada. Si se quiere parar esto, se hace bien. Un mes, dos, los que haga falta hasta hacer entrar en razón a estos políticos del diablo. Pero no tres escasos días que lo único que consiguen es “cabrear al personal”, y lo más importante, dejar escapar otra oportunidad para seguir formándose antes que todo haya cambiado.
